Antigua Guatemala with Lunch from Guatemala CityAntigua Guatemala is one of the most important tourist centers in Guatemala. It was founded in 1541, and since then it has kept its architectural form, its character and its monuments almost intact as if suspended in time. The city is such a marvelous example of planning and colonial architecture, that UNESCO declared it "Patrimony of Humanity" in 1979.

Holy Week is the most spectacular time in Antigua, and undoubtedly it is one of the greatest religious celebrations in Latin América. Colorful processions tour the streets and spectacular color carpets, made of sawdust, flower petals and seeds, lie down for the processions to step on.

Antigua is also known for its jade factories and for its hand painted birds and butterflies. In the Central Plaza you can visit Palace of the Captains General, City Hall and Cathedral of San Jose and other noteworthy buildings are the Convent of Capuchinas and the churches of Santa Clara, San Francisco, La Recolección, El Calvario and La Merced. All of them are within comfortable walking distance.

You can also visit, by bus, the Indian villages at the slope of the Agua Volcano. Some of these towns are: San Antonio Aguas Calientes, Santa María de Jesús, San Felipe de Jesús and Santa Catalina Barahona.
